Roots

A Nanaimo family since 1978.

Andrew Merilees comes from a long-standing Nanaimo family that has called the city home since 1978. His family first settled in the Departure Bay area, where Andrew continues to live today, maintaining a strong connection to the neighbourhood and the community he grew up in.

Both of Andrew’s parents were active in the community and Andrew grew up with an instilled passion to contribute to make Nanaimo a better place. Andrew’s father Bill Merilees was a well-known naturalist, author and community activist who helped foster a greater appreciation for Vancouver Island’s natural environment, and his mother June Merilees is a dedicated educator who still contributes to our local schools.

Andrew attended Departure Bay Elementary School, Woodlands Jr. Secondary and graduated from Nanaimo District Secondary School. He began his post-secondary education at Malaspina University-College (now VIU).
